Curveballs The Top 4 Ways to Hit the Curveballs of Life

The Top 4 Ways to Hit the Curveballs of Life

by Rochelle Griffin

How do you handle your nutrition and fitness when life throws you curve balls like a hurricane and an unexpected military activation? Needless to say, I’m writing to you from experience today. As we wait to see what happens with Hurricane Isaac, my hubby’s unit has been activated to help protect the great state of Florida. Both situations could easily derail me, but I won’t let them. Here are my top 4 ways to stay on track when life is suddenly turbulent.

1. Have a plan

It is imperative to have a plan in place BEFORE life becomes crazy. I already know what workout program that I’m doing. I simply have to look at the workout calendar to know exactly which workout I’m doing on a particular day. It’s a no-brainer for me. If I didn’t have this, I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that I wouldn’t workout. I’m just being real.

The same thing is true for my nutrition. Every Sunday I sit down and plan out my meals for the coming week. Even with a hurricane, I have healthy canned foods in the house because of a plan. If I didn’t do this, it would be very easy to pick up the phone and order pizza for everyone during times of craziness.

2. Have a visual accountability

I’m a visual girl and have found that this trick can work magic for me. I take a blank calendar for the month and tape it to my bathroom mirror.  Every day I write in the workout that I did and whether or not my eating was on point. Then I “X” out the day. There is something about seeing those “X”s that acts as a motivator for me to keep going.

If you are more of a technological person, you can log your daily workouts in WOWY (an online gym) for free and have the same effect.

3. Have a support system

When life becomes crazy, it’s very easy to turn to food as an emotional escape and way to cope. I know this first hand. Having a support system in place beforehand can literally make or break your fitness plan. It’s important to have a friend or a group like my Facebook Power Starters where you can go and say that you are stressed and having a crap day. Having people rally around you can give you the necessary strength needed to stay on track.

4. Have faith

This one may surprise you, but I have found that having faith during crazy times keeps my health & fitness moving in the right direction. I keep in mind that whatever is going on in my life at the moment is simply a blip on the screen of my entire lifetime and won’t last forever. It helps me put everything into perspective and stay the course.

Life is always going to throw us curve balls. It’s a given. You do not, however, have to strike out. By having a plan, a visual accountability, a support system, and a little faith, you are arming yourself with an arsenal of weapons to fight back and hit those balls directly out of the park.

Game on!
